For our August drawing challenge we are encouraging you to do some research! This month we are drawing CRYPTIDS!

Each week (starting the 2nd so each region has a full week) you can choose a cryptid (or more than one if you like) from the region and create some art inspired by them!

As this includes diving into different cultures and folklore remember to be respectful!

And as always please tag us in your work so we can see and share it! Have fun!

Before we get into August meetups I just wanted to say thank you again for celebrating one year of Sketchbook Club! Our party at the beginning of the month was so much fun and we had a wonderful turnout.

First up:

Our August meetup is going to be an outing! We are going to the Museum of Osteology on August 2nd! We will meet there around 11am when they open and wait around for about 15 minutes to give folks time to arrive. This will be a “stay as long as you like” kind of meeting, so feel free to roam around as you please!

As with our other outings, we don’t handle tickets so if you would like to attend you will be responsible for your own ticket. You can purchase them online or at the door (I believe they are about $15). You can also check out your local library for an Experience Pass that has provides admission to the museum! If you need assistance with getting a ticket please reach out to us (email, discord, IG dm) and let us know and we will help you figure something out!

Second:

In August we are going to make plans for weekday meetups! We have heard from many of you that Sundays don’t work with your schedule, so hopefully this will give some more people a chance to take part in the community! These secondary meetings will put together by our fearless co-runner Claudia!

Wednesday the 5th we will be meeting at MoQana (formerly known as Mocha House) in Edmond from 6-9pm. Come enjoy a delicious beverage and good, creative company!

Third thing: We didn’t get around to having a monthly challenge this month since next month is ArtFight and a lot of our members are prepping for that! And our July challenge will probably end up being ArtFight as well, so feel free to join in!

A few days early, but here is our monthly challenge for May! Mermay!

He is our member of the month for February! Joey shared some facts and info about himself and their art, as well as some awesome artwork!

How long have you been making art?

Since I was little, like 3-4 years old! I used to draw what my mom called “potato people” on the back of the church bulletins.

What kind of art do you make? What is your medium of choice?

I really love linocut. But I work with a bit of everything, from digital to crafting! Whatever's caught my eye most recently.

What drives you to create? What inspires you?

I like surrounding myself with art and whimsy. I also design for plays/musicals and it’s really satisfying to see my vision truly come to life. But sometimes I’m just trying to put down on paper what my brain is telling me. Sometimes it’s a little skeleton guy, sometimes it’s an eldritch horror!

What has been your biggest influence (another artist, a piece of media, etc.)?

70s/80s medieval fantasy and old school horror. I’m fascinated by the architecture and style of those aesthetics and tend to combine them a lot. I’m heavily inspired by Plastiboo’s Vermis series.

What is your favorite part of the art process?

The brainstorming! I don’t really go into making art with a solid plan. I love to let the project guide itself as I go.

Why is a creative community important to you?

Encouragement, inspiration, but also it’s just neat to be around other creative people. I try new things I never would have otherwise if I didn’t have a community!

What is your biggest art goal?

I want to someday make a full tarot deck using multiple art mediums! Printmaking, cross stitch, digital, inking, acrylic, etc.

What piece of advice would you give to a artist just starting out?

Doodle. Doodling and little goofy drawings have improved my drive to create more than a major serious finished piece does. The big pieces matter but don’t forget the little doodles.

Do you have a shop (online or physical), portfolio, or place where your work can be found that you would like to shout out?

@gh0stly.art & I’m hoping to start selling my chainmail bracelet/anklet/boot chain pieces later this year! So keep an eye out for that :-)

Any other info, fun facts, or something you would like to share?

Sometimes you need to find a place to sit in an old cemetery on a nice day and draw. And then thank those that are resting there for their time and be on your way. It’s very calming.

She is our member of the month for February! Jordan shared some facts and info about herself and her art, as well as a few pieces of her gorgeous artwork.

Q: How long have you been making art?

A: I've been drawing and dabbling in the arts since 1st grade.

Q: What kind of art do you make? What is your medium of choice?

A: I am currently a digital artist using procreate.

Q: What drives you to create? What inspires you?

A: People have always fascinated me. I love drawing portraits using bright colors and bold compositions. My creative process draws inspiration from Wes Anderson films, the Japanese City Pop aesthetic, and 1980’s Glam Rock. I use elements from all of these art styles to create highly saturated portraits of people.

Q: What has been your biggest influence (another artist, a piece of media, etc.)?

A: Van Gogh has been my biggest influence. His passion for making art has always been inspiring.

Q: What is your favorite part of the art process?

A: The moment the piece doesnt start looking like shit anymore and everything starts coming together. :)

Q: Why is a creative community important to you?

A: Community is important for mental health but also having a creative community, having that fills my artsy soul.

Q: What is your biggest art goal?

A: To fall completely back in love with making art. I've been in a rut for the last 4 years.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to a beginner artist just starting out?

A: Just make it exist first, you can make it good later. Make shit art so you can get to the good art.

Q: Do you have a shop (online or physical), portfolio, or place where your work can be found that you would like to shout out?

A: I got into running last year and ran the OKC Memorial 10K. This year I am currently training to run the OKC Memorial half marathon (my first half marathon) in April.

✨FEBRUARY MEETUP✨

Our next meetup will be an outing! Join us on February 1st at 11am for a trip into the Myriad Botanical Gardens Crystal Bridge Conservatory. We will be joined by the Young Naturalist’s Club, so this will be an amazing opportunity to make new friends and learn something new!

If you would like to attend you will be responsible for your own ticket. They are available at the conservatory for about $11, but I believe the Pioneer library system has experience passes that you can look into checking out that includes a ticket in. We will meet at 11am and give a few minute for people to arrive before heading in. It will be a “enjoy at your own pace” kind of day, so feel free to wander for as long as you like.

✨MEMBER OF THE MONTH✨

I am SO excited to tell you about the launch of our new Member of the Month program! You are all such amazing artists that we simply must give you a spotlight.

Each month we will randomly select a MOTM candidate and contact them with an interview form to fill out. They will provide examples of their artwork (and a selfie if they feel like it) and on the first Friday of the month we will highlight them in an Instagram post and a special newsletter! They will be able to talk about their artwork, their inspiration, and also shoutout where their work can be purchased!

It is completely optional to apply for it, but if you would like to put your name in the running for MOTM please fill out this form (unfortunately for now I do think you have to download the google forms app to fill it out. Eventually I will find a better system).

The club was featured in a post by HappyHourOKC so we have had an influx of new followers on Instagram!

It is an absolute honor to be recognized as a local group that can provide community. I never imagined this little idea would become as large as it is and it never would have happened without all of you!

✨JANUARY CHALLENGE✨

Our first theme of the year will be “Hero’s Journey!”

Design a hero, it could be a fantasy version of yourself or an original character, to represent the beginning of your art adventure into the new year! As an extra challenge, think of what kind of adventure your hero is going on and what kind of supplies they might need to help them on their quest. Draw an expanded look at what they have in their adventurers pack and what kind of items or tools they might have prepared!

✨PLANS FOR THE NEW YEAR✨

I initially started the club in June/July not thinking it would take off, so when the page started to climb past 100, 200, and now even past 300 followers I got a little overwhelmed! That meant the following months were spent on just making sure I could keep up with the monthly meetings and all the grand plans I had for it took a bit of a back burner. With the assistance of our co-runner, Claudia, and a lot of input from our online community I think we’re ready to make 2026 our year!

We’re talking…

• Regular monthly challenges (because I completely forgot about November this year).

• A goal of at least 3 outings to zoos, museums, etc.

• Highlighting a member of the month.

• Plans for a community zine.

• Maybe a club designed sticker pack?

Will every single one of these things happen? Who’s to say. But I definitely want to put them out into the open so everyone can know what the possibilities are.

The number one goal is always going to be having a fun, safe, laid back environment so we can have a creative space amidst the day jobs, busy schedules, and doomscrolling.

I’ll close out by saying a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came to a meetup or joined the Discord. You all made this possible! I hope to see you all in the new year and I cannot wait to see what we all create!

I know the back to back holidays can make things hectic but I hope you’ll take some time to rest and do something creative.

Hello creative people! It’s a new month with new possibilities and we are starting our first monthly challenge. Monthly challenge themes are thought up by club members and then voted on via our Discord and Instagram story (or in this month’s case a random wheel because there was a three way tie). If you have any ideas, send them on over and I can add them to the list.

Your August challenge is to try out a new medium! Switch up your art routine and try something new! If you would like to share your adventures with a new medium on social media use #OKCSCchallenge so that we can see it and share it!

We had our second meeting yesterday at Trove Arts & Crafts and you all really showed up! Our number more than doubled from the first meeting and we barely had enough room for everyone! I really appreciate you all rolling with it and being willing to snuggle up with your fellow club members to make room for everyone. We also had a great time sharing art supplies and an enjoying the snacks that some people brought!

I am still working on getting our September meeting figured out, but I will get that info out to you all whenever I have it all finalized.

✨Welcome to the OKC Sketchbook Club!✨

We hosted our inaugural meetup at the beginning of the month on July 6th at Toast and Coffee in OKC! It was a fantastic time and I’m SO happy that so many of you are excited for this little idea I had!

The idea of a local community of creatives had been bouncing around my head for a few months but I woke up one day last month and thought “what the heck” and made the Instagram and Discord. I was not expecting more than a few friends and acquaintances to join in and now we are fast approaching 200 of you beautiful humans!

I am absolutely blown away by the response to the club and the amount of love and encouragement everyone has given so far! I appreciate you all being patient with me as I learn how to run a club as an adult.

Our next meetup will be on August 3rd from 1-4pm at Trove Arts & Crafts in their studio space!

Trove is an AMAZING second hand craft store helping to keep usable supplies out of landfills and affordable for people who can give it new life!

For our meeting: there is no set schedule or activity and you may come and go as you please during the 1-4 time frame. You can bring art supplies you would like to share with other members and have a fun, chill time making art and chatting with your fellow local artists!
